Medical Career Options in Aberdeen

Crathes Castle
It's a great time to be training in Aberdeen, we have a steady turnover of GP partnerships available every year along with a number of salaried GP positions. On top of this we have a large cohort of GPs projected to retire over the next five years so it is a good time to be training here! We need to attract more GPs to the area to fill all these vacancies.

We have lots of options open to you when you complete your training. As well as the standard routes into partnership and salaried posts there is the innovative Career Start scheme for newly qualified GPs (see earlier blog entry) and the Out of Hours service (GMED) are developing new posts to allow GPs to work in-hours and out of hours in our new Emergency Care Centre (ECC). These new exciting posts will allow GPs to develop skills in A&E and unscheduled care and can be flexible to accommodate most work patterns.

There are also plenty of opportunities to develop into a GP with a specialist interest (GPwSi) in Diabetes, Sexual Health, Scanning, Dermatology and Teaching to name a few. The Undergraduate Department are always keen to meet new enthusiastic GPs to deliver on their teaching programme in the new state of the art teaching facility (the Suttie Centre).

Out with GP we are keen to attract doctors to all our training programmes. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is a long established teaching hospital which has invested heavily in the newly opened Emergency Care Centre. This is an 8 storey building housing all the medical wards with A&E and the GP Out of Hours service in a combined unit on the ground floor.
