New Start to GPST Group Work

Last week saw the new Grampian Programme ST1s attend their first group work session. The new ST1s (some of whom had already been in to the department for PBSGL training) were welcomed by some members of the deanery team, their GP group facilitators, and their ST3 colleagues.

The certainly looked just as happy at the end of the session as they did at the start!

GP Emergency Care Day

Last week GPSTs on the Grampian programme had the option of a Core Workshop covering common GP Emergencies.

The course, developed locally by the Postgraduate Team and local BASICs instructors, gave the GPSTs the opportunity to run live emergency cases including cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndrome, choking and airway management, epilepsy, sepsis and acute asthma.

Each simulated case was run in real time with trainees managing the case including obtaining IV access, administering drugs and watching the clinical scenario change dependent on their management.

The cases were followed by presentations on the scenarios and their management including the latest clinical guidelines.

The trainees really enjoyed the day and gave good feedback.

Very useful scenarios -Hands on skills learnt or revised -Useful to do CPR assessment early -Goodinteractive scenarios -Useful to be able to draw upthe medications and give injections etc-Good to have scenarios which might be seen in GP-Non-threatening -Both instructors good and approachable -Very good and useful workshop, mostly because it was GP lead and more realisticfor general practice scenarios, taking account available equipment and drugs. Well chosen clinical scenarios and relevant to GP. Quite useful actually to draw updrugs and the equipmentbecausein hospital usually nurses would be helping but in GP practice we are expected to administer medication.
