The highland village of Carrbridge hosted World Porridge Making Championships on the 6th October 2018. The village nestles within the scenic Cairngorms National Park with a spectacular backdrop of the Monadhliath Mountains and enhanced further by a sprinkling of glorious autumnal weather the competition was already off to a great start.
This year breaking with tradition and for the first time in its 25-year history the converted ‘Golden Spurtle’ was awarded to two competitors Calle Myrsell and Per Carlsson both from Sweden. They both won using Swedish oats in the ‘Best Traditional Porridge’ category adding to the oatmeal only water and salt.
The health benefits of porridge are well documented in lower blood pressures, reduction in diabetes, lowing of cholesterol and protect against heart disease. The Donnelly family who recently entered the Guinness book of world records with a combined age of 1,075 years attributed their longevity to porridge oats. These benefits are further topped by living and working in such fantastic surrounding #train&workinthehighlands…!
A fantastic festival day out made all the better great weather and Carrbridge with its famous 18th Century packhorse bridge (pictured here).
